The Lion King @ Dolby

This past Sunday, my family and I had the opportunity to experience Dolby Cinema at AMC Lincoln Square. Talk about an experience!

We saw The Lion King, which if you’re reading this and have yet to see it, it’s a must! Before I dive in, how cute is Kyrie getting her face painted?!

She’s so big! 😢

This was Kyrie’s first time at the movies, so a big thank you to Dolby for giving her the BEST first time experience! It was also my first time experiencing such an amazing quality screening. Seriously, I’m never going to want to watch a movie any other way. The colors, the quality, the picture, it’s just insane. It was so REAL! I truly felt apart of the movie, which only made it more relatable for me.

Dolby Cinema is designed from the ground up to provide the best sound, picture, and environment for any movie — letting you step into another reality and surrender to the story.

I highly recommend Dolby Cinema for the best quality movie experience. THIS IS NOT AN AD! I genuinely enjoyed the experience all the way through. Thank you Dolby for allowing us the opportunity! There is no other way to experience a movie!

Magazine 411

Hey my loves!

If you’re reading this, most likely you follow me on Insta-G, @kingdes. Yesterday I shared that I want to make some updates to my apartment for a fresh feel, and I started to show some of my favorites from my magazine/book collection. I was so elated with the feedback and questions, which brought me here.

One of the things I hoard is magazines and books. I AM OBSESSED. In the midst of my posting, I got a flood of questions about where I cop, price points, and how I select my, in all reality, inspiration.

When I buy books, I buy them because they move me. The colors. The images. Sometimes I don’t even understand the language it’s written in, and that makes me even more intrigued.

If you’re looking for dope magazines, and live in NYC, hit up the millions of magazine shops in the city! My personal favorites are in Soho. When I’m browsing, I pay attention to what jumps out at me. Then I follow up with price. I like to keep my magazine purchases under $40. You can always negotiate when you’re buying more than one, and you don’t want to leave that pricy one behind. I am a TOP NOTCH HAGGLER. It’s a gift really!

IMG-2809.jpg

Some of my favorite mags are ODDA, Antidote, The New Order, CR, Hypebeast, Highsnobiety, and the list goes on. Antitode is the perfect example, as it’s a French fashion mag published twice a year. I’m so intrigued by other cultures, so when I dive into my magazines I get a taste of that lifestyle through them. I learn so much! It’s one of the few things that keeps me inspired, and it’s always nice to peek inside when I’m lacking inspo.

I'm still working on the apartment displays, but we’re getting somewhere!

When it comes to coffee table books, I’m definitely more inclined to spend more. If it’s worth it to me, I go for it! I have a bunch on my want list, like Louis Vuitton, Murakami, and CR.

I have a deep love for Carine!

One of my prized possessions!

One of my prized possessions!

Amazon is a great place to start for coffee table books, as many of my messages were from my following outside of NYC. What’s nice about Amazon is that you can find used books in BRAND NEW condition, and save some coins!

As I mentioned, the book or magazine has to move me in some way. One of my favorites in my collection is “Where’s Karl?”. This Karl variation to Where’s Waldo, is filled with pages of fun, finding Karl at all these cool places. Interactive books are always great! I like to house them for when I’m entertaining.

So much fun!

So much fun!

If you’re looking to enhance your personal collection, start with research! Think about what you’re interested in, and start searching. You’ll start to find so many dope publications in ranges of styles! That’s what I love about collecting. All of my books are mainly revolved around fashion, but they are all SO DIFFERENT, where I think there’s something for everyone in my collection.

Let me know what are some of your fave magazines and books, as I’m always down for something new! Are you coppin’ any of my faves? Drop a comment below! ✨

The effects of social media, and not letting it get to your head.

Let me start this off by saying I absolutely love my social media family and I wouldn’t trade them in for anything in the world! I am so grateful that social media (Instagram specifically) has given me such an amazing platform and I’m so fortunate to have so many amazing supporters on IG, 23.7K and growing to be exact! ♥️

As much as I love it, I’m sure we’ve all been there. I find that the more I use my Insta-G, it’s very easy for me to get caught up in things that don’t matter. Without even realizing it, we begin to compare ourselves to people who only shine a light on a fraction of their lives, and that fraction is made up of rainbows and love songs.

Most of you already follow me on Instagram @kingdes, and know that I like to keep it as real as possible. If you don’t already follow me, don’t worry, we’ll give you a second to click the link and get acquainted.

Acquainted? Good, let’s continue.

Yesterday I made a #PersonalPost sharing how the last couple of weeks social media has really taken a toll on me. I don’t wish to come off ungrateful, but it is very hard balancing social media being a large portion of my brand, being a mother to a 2 year old, being there for my husby as a wife, and just taking care of myself altogether. The real tea is that I feel as though I hold a big responsibility to my following. I love you all so much, and I want to be there in every way possible, making myself as available as I can be. Without realizing that this app plays such a huge role in my life, it has become very easy for me to fall into what I call the “social media hole”. You start scrolling and scrolling and scrolling until you can’t scroll anymore and subconsciously you made a list of things comparing yourself to others.  I find people are so quick to #Goals someone else’s life (mine included), and not #Goals their own lives! We’re so fast to think “Wow I want what they have, OMG look at her new Balenciagas, sheesh her boobs are perfect, damn I wish I was invited to that event, man why haven’t I moved yet” and the list goes on, and on, and on, until you don’t realize subconsciously you’re putting out negative energy.

What I’m trying to get at is that it’s important for us to remember that social media is just that, social media. People only show about 2% of their real life, and that 2% reflects as 100% happy. No one wants to show their hardships. No one wants to show a struggle. Here is where I differ. I want you all to really know who Destinie is, and get to know me for exactly who I am. I don’t try to hide behind a post curated to emulate perfection. I want to be exactly who I am for you so that you fall in love with me for ME! A REAL HUMAN BEING!

30 paragraphs later, and this blog post point is that I want to help anyone out there who has fallen victim to social media. I decided to do a little research, and I came up with a few tips that I hope can help! —

  1. Don’t let social media be the first thing you do in the morning. It’s so easy to grab that phone off the rip. Instead, wake up and give thanks. Be still. Take a couple of minutes to really plant your energy. If you visualize positivity, this is what you will get. Think about what you want to accomplish that day. Take time to focus on yourself, and give gratitude for things you have in your life before you start scrolling and comparing yourself to someone else.
  2. Give yourself a time frame. Some of us use IG as a business tool and HAVE to use it more frequently. I personally made a rule that I will not hop on Insta before 9A. Think about what time you want to get on, what you want accomplish while on, and then get off. Here’s a little fun challenge my best friends church was doing: from 7P-7A NO PHONE! Map something like this for yourself!
  3. Be selective with what you respond to. This is a really big one for me. Studies show that stress is caused by  social overload. I personally have to deal with a lot of people on a day-to-day basis, and it can become very overwhelming. Take the time you need to take a step back and don’t always feel like you have to respond. Most importantly, DO NOT RESPOND TO NEGATIVITY.  Sadly everyone isn’t polite on social media, and giving into this will only drain you. Believe me. Keep it positive.
  4. I want to note that it’s totally okay to get inspired by others, BUT never feel like you’re not good enough. The moment you start to see that you’re comparing yourself, or having ill thoughts, close the app.
  5. Sometimes the ones we’re inspired by can affect us and that’s okay. Unfollow any pages that make you feel less than grand. Mute them. Swipe to the next story. Do whatever it is you have to do to keep the positive thoughts flowing.

If you have any tips that help you conquer social, please comment them below! Also, let me know if you’ll be trying any of my tips, and how they work out!

Again, I love you ALL and THANK YOU for being my family ♥️

Louis Luggage Living: Affordable “staycation”

Hey my loves!

Last week was mega hectic for me! My birthday was the 25th, and I had a pop up in Soho the SAME WEEK (which if you’re in NY you can shop my collection all month at 13 Crosby Street). I’m finally able to sit down and give you guys a recap.

If you follow me on Insta, @kingdes, you probably saw my birthday fits over the weekend. I had such an amazing staycation! Being a busy lady makes it hard for me to plan things for myself, so I spent my last days scrambling. It was mega last minute, but bae and I went to Atlantic City for some quality time away from the babies.

You honestly don’t even have to leave the resort. Good eats, spa, indoor and outdoor pool are only SOME of the perks.

We really enjoyed our stay! What made it great was only being 2.5 hours from home, AND everything was super affordable! We popped bottles in the room, and enjoyed each other’s company. The resort has a bunch of great lounge areas, shopping, and even a club! We missed Rick Ross that weekend, LOL!

DIY: Mini home updates, that make a huge difference.

It's been quite a while since I've shared my lastest living room update. I woke up this morning admiring just how cool, and easy it can be to transform a living space.

Frames are a great place to start. There are tons of shapes, sizes, and colors, to help get that look you're going for. My frames are all from Ikea. They were all under $20!

509D57E0-5720-4796-AC95-1653A861FF36.jpg

Not only are frame options endless, but so are the images that can go in them. Prints are always a great, affordable option. Remember the above print I got from the Burton x MTTM event? It's so cool framed!

Don't hesitate to get creative! One of my favorites is my Supreme piece that I made with Metrocards! It's something I know I'm going to keep forever.

Another fun DIY you can create in any room, is a mini magazine/book stand. I created mine with a photo-frame holder from Ikea. I substituted frames for magazines! I keep it updated with my current favorites. It makes the area feel cozy, and can easily be refreshed from time to time.

Comment any cool DIY home ideas that you have! I love decorating, and now that Fall is coming, I'm excited to refresh my home.

THE REAL BUY

I'm so happy I was able to catch Trevor "Trouble" Andrew's "The Real Buy" instillation over at Milk Gallery on 15th Street. It was so inspiring!

“The Real Buy” crosses the boundaries between art installation, live event and open workspace that looks inside Trevor “Trouble” Andrew’s work space, raw DIY process of making his vision a reality with the creation of his GucciGhost art project and reimagining of the brand’s logo which led to his collaboration with Gucci. This will be the first time the public will get to view his original works that were created before they became “Real”. — themilkgallery.com

For those who weren't able to view the installation, here are some photos I captured:
